The Nickel-A-Dance is a free, family-friendly jazz concert series in New Orleans, celebrating the city’s rich musical heritage. Founded in 1994, it features top local jazz musicians performing classic jazz, blues, and swing. *Doors 2:30pm | Music Sets at **3:00pm & 4:45pm* Jamil Sharif began playing music at the age of 14. Much of his influence came from his father, the late world-renowned trumpeter, Emery Humphrey Thompson (Umar Sharif). His musical training began in New Orleans under the instruction of George Jansen, one of the city’s finest music educators and a former trumpeter with the New Orleans Symphony. After graduating from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) high school where he studied with the late, great Ellis Marsalis, Jamil then attended Southern University of New Orleans where he studied under Alvin Batiste, Roger Dickerson Sr, and Edward “Kidd” Jordan. In addition to features with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, dozens of festival and concert appearances in over 10 countries, and musicals across the US, UK and Europe throughout his career, Sharif has been featured in and/or contributed soundtracks to more than 7 major motion pictures between 1993 - 2004, including “Undercover Blues,” “The Big Easy,” and the award-winning biopic, “Ray,” about the legendary Ray Charles. This afternoon, he presents his band The New Orleans Extravaganza, for a romp through his expert stylings across traditional jazz, swing, old rhythm & blues, and big band numbers.
