SBP is an innovative, award-winning nonprofit organization that exists to ensure that communities at risk of, or impacted by, disaster have the resources to prepare and recover in the most prompt, efficient and predictable way possible.

The key to SBP’s programmatic success is its model - using volunteers and in-house skilled labor to eliminate the need for (and cost of) subcontractors. AmeriCorps members from all over the country serve as client case managers, volunteer coordinators and construction site supervisors, overseeing the labor of 10,000 volunteers each year, per location. SBP saves time and money by exercising direct control over labor and scheduling, which also allows us to create well-paying jobs for veterans, at-risk youth, recently incarcerated individuals, and other under- and unemployed residents. These components, combined with a construction system enhanced and optimized through ongoing partnerships with Toyota, UPS & Zurich, rebuilds homes far below market rate, and carries out construction projects with much lower subsidies than traditional affordable housing models.

SBP was founded in March 2006 by Zack Rosenburg and Liz McCartney after the couple, who lived in Washington, D.C. during Katrina, volunteered in St. Bernard Parish in February 2006. Inspired by residents’ collective spirit and fierce desire to rebuild their homes and communities, Zack and Liz launched SBP in New Orleans to help the community achieve its goals.

In wake of Hurricane Sandy in October of 2012, SBP expanded to the NY & NJ area. Now with several local partnerships, recovery efforts are well underway. Great success has already and will continue to be achieved through implementing the SBP model in this region.
